Club Update

The Club barbecue at the cricket pavilion on 17 August was a great success. The high spot for me was 10:15 when the Dutch found their voices and filled the pavilion with song; perhaps no surprise this coincided with the demise of the red wine.

12 pairs with handicaps between 29 and 88 took part in the Club’s first handicap doubles tournament in August. We will make this an annual event.

Dates for your diaries:

  • Club Night – Sunday 18 December 6pm – 9pm
  • Boxing Day Party with Quiz – Monday 26 December from 6pm
  • Hangover Doubles – Saturday 31 December to Monday 2 January

The Club Night will include supper and seasonal treats. We will send out further details on each event shortly.   Please speak with Chris or John to confirm interest in the above events.

Competition success

Irish National Champion – Maggie Henderson-Tew made excellent use of home court advantage to secure the court’s first national closed title.  Whack to ya!

Taylor Cup – Reflecting his impressive development over that last 12 months, John improved on his last year’s runner-up position to win the Taylor Cup at Manchester.

Category C Championship (open to handicaps 25-29) was won by Radley College student Ben Boddington.

Category F Championship (open to handicaps 50-54) was won by our own Mike Armstrong. The T&RA website reports “Mike’s stamina never wavered, coming through 6/3 in the final set – due in no small part to a portion of sticky toffee pudding devoured over lunch!!”

Father & Sons Champions 2011

Congratulations to Bryan and Pete Brown who won this year’s tournament at Leamington.

Club Hangover Doubles

Once again Chris arranged a fun doubles competition with an unconventional twist.  Last year we saw competitors wearing external underwear, musical ties, hats, scarves, wetsuits, aprons and overalls to try to gain additional advantage over their opponents.  This year the main twist was serving from the hazard end!  Please click here to see more information and photographs.

New Club Singles Champion

The singles final, 11 December 2010, was an exciting and closely contested match between Ed Pearson and Mick Dean.
