Boomerang Cup, Team & Individuals Doubles Tournament 2013

25 January 2013

Reports from the Boomerang Cup 2013 by Nick Manby-Brown

[Ed. Our captain submitted his first report in the wee hours shortly after the opening cocktail party. Good to see such commitment so early in the tournament!]

Radley Rascals had an early start – 8am – but the youngster in the group played spectacularly with great assistance from James and won 8-0. Nick and Bob (Bob playing some of his best tennis ever) won 8-4, the Nick and Kathryn lost 8-4. We needed Tim and Kathryn to win one game at least to win the first opening match against the RMTC Attack Dolphins, and they won 6 games but lost 8-6. So a good team win for us, but just as important, played in great spirit. Sorry to the players for laughter in the dedans when we discussed dolphins, cigarettes, and blow-holes.!

The Rascals are through to the final knock-out stages of the competition with 2 matches won out of 2 – meaning our match against the Penthouse Pets on Monday can be slightly more relaxed (they are through as well). The handicap doubles have been successful with Tim and his partner winning 3 out of 3, and Bob Wilson and his partner also doing the same. James and Kathryn are also through. The only failure was myself – but I blame the responsibilities of being the team captain which took its toll!

Congratulations to Bob who has not lost a match yet (7 wins out of 7), and
Tim who is playing beautifully.

Rascals Report on Wed evening Melbourne time. Everyone who reads this and plays Real Tennis should come over to Melbourne for the Boomerang, and for those friends that don’t play this amazing sport – it’s about time you learnt so that you can come here. We are having a great time, and it’s so difficult when the temperature tomorrow is predicted to be 37 degrees to imagine what’s happening on the other side of the world with the snow and ice. Take care everyone.

The Rascals had a loss against the Penthouse Pets on Monday, which was played in great spirit, but as we were both through to the finals, the result didn’t matter too much, and we had fun!!! Today we played a local team – the RMTC Hypotheticals – a fun team who we managed to beat, with great play by Bob Wilson who defended the galleries (after a bit of persuasion from the captain!!) and support from the rest of us.

So we are through to the quarter finals on Friday, and tomorrow, the rest of the team are in the final stages of the Handicap Doubles.

The last day of the Boomerang is here (its early morning now) and sadly the  Radley Rascals have been beaten in the quarter finals by Hatfield (pictured) –  2 sets all and we were only beaten by 2 games, so I am very proud of our  team and we did very well to get to this stage. Thank you Kathryn, James,  Bob, and Tim for your valiant efforts, and we all had an unforgettable time in  the sun in Melbourne. New and old friends, fun and games, laughter, and great sportsmanship. Thank you everyone.

Tomorrow is Saturday and Finals Day – two semi-finals at 9.30am and the finals in the afternoon. Then we have the Presentation Dinner at the  MCG, 10 minutes walk away. And our team, and its name, is so good, they  named a wine after us (pictured).
