This year the club’s singles and doubles championships were held over a single weekend, with the best players by handicap invited to take place. Chris selected pairings for the doubles and then seeded on handicap.

The draws included some new names this year and all performed well, reflecting the general increase in standard across the membership as a whole.

Radley Singles

The draw below shows the results and a good slice of the story. Players seemed to play each round as if it were their final, with no quarter asked or given. Mark Jaggers and Paul Miron both stood out in their first round matches, tackling and at times bridging significant handicap differences, with Mark winning through to round two.

The final saw Stewart take on Ali Hakimi. With each round to the final, Ali became stronger and stronger. The lower handicap player showed respect for his opponent, but dominated from the start. Ali deservedly claimed the Chris Ronaldson Trophy and the title of Club Singles Champion, 2013.

Radley Doubles

The members supporting from the dedans saw some of the best Club doubles ever seen at Radley during this weekend. The final was truly memorable. Ali was close to the top of his game and Vern was showing why many consider him a doubles specialist, while Stewart was moving and striking the ball with impressive energy and Mick was using all his experience to good effect. The result was impossible to call until the end of the short third set, when Vern and Ali emerged as the new Club Doubles Champions.

We must do this more often!
