SL Singles Champion 2014

2014 Club Championships were each held over a weekend as this seemed a popular approach.

For the singles the Pros created a draw from the eight available members with lowest handicaps, as ever matches were close and tightly competed culminating in Mike Henman and Stewart Licudi, the two lowest handicap players, in the final. Both players treated those watching to one of the most competitive Radley finals with great commitment, determination and generous helpings of drama and good humour. In the early stages, the match looked ready to go to three sets, especially after Stewart injured a hamstring, but the injury seemed to increase his focus and Stewart moved to win in straight sets 6-5, 6-3.

The doubles draw included a wide range of handicaps with the Pros arranging a staggered draw to maximise opportunity for close matches. Matches pretty much followed form and handicap bringing Stewart Licudi & Nino Merola and Mick Dean & Vern Cassin, to the final. Mike and Vern are by far the most experienced doubles players and have experience of playing together while Stewart and Nino are rising stars who learn quickly. The match started in an unpredicted way with Mick and Vern taking the first set 6-1. Having seen that, it was equally surprising when Stewart and Nino reversed the score to take the second set. By this stage all players were playing their more natural game with less over-hitting and a competitive third set. Stewart and Nino took an early lead but Mick and Vern were looking like pulling close with a 40-0 lead which was surrendered to give daylight to Stewart and Nino who move on to take the third set and the match 1-6, 6-1, 6-3.
